چکیده
Abstract Modal verbs are well-known to license ellipsis of their complements under certain conditions. In the literature on Spanish, such sequences, which I refer as Ellipsis (ME), have been traditionally argued involve a null pronoun. These analyses therefore treat ME simply an instance Null Complement Anaphora (NCA). this article, scrutinize data adduced in Spanish and defend that (i) language is different from NCA, (ii) must PF-deletion TP node. Even though these claims not new, provide novel attempt clarify some controversial facts exist literature. doing so, strengthen recent view phenomenon.

Sameness, Ellipsis and Anaphora
We compare explicit assertions of sameness with analogous elliptical and anaphoric expressions, and find striking differences in their interpretation. We account for those differences with a two part proposal: first, we propose that same is additive, similar to too. Second, same must take scope over a containing event-denoting expression. We give evidence that the scope-taking of same is subjec...

متن کاملAnaphora and Ellipsis in Type-Logical Grammar
The aim of the present paper is to outline a unified account of anaphoricity and ellipsis phenomena within the framework of Type Logical Categorial Grammar.1 There is at least one conceptual and one empirical reason to pursue such a goal. Firstly, both phenomena are characterized by the fact that they re-use semantic resources that are also used elsewhere. Secondly, they show a striking similar...
متن کاملResolving Complement Anaphora
In a quantified expression, the possibility of referring to the set-theoretical difference of restrictor and scope is known as complement anaphora (CA). Existing literature suggests two ways of analyzing this phenomenon either as confusion with reference to the maximal set, or as genuine complement reference. This paper will show that resolving an anaphor to the complement set is never a viable...
